This area of the Ancient Egyptian Vault is dedicated to some of the finest artwork ever created by humankind. I'm including architecture here because I consider it an art form. The Ancient Egyptians had a wonderful sense of form and color, and they spared no expense when crafting art for their Pharoahs or Gods. You'll see lots of gold, lapis lazuli, carnelian, turquoise, homemade colored glass, and many other precious stones in their sculptures and jewelry. Much of their painting has a two dimensional attitude, but you must remember they approached a great deal of their brushwork with a hieroglyphic bent because it was done as part of an ongoing story in preparation for the Afterlife journey...
This page is graphic intensive...Please be patient
This mask is 24 pounds of solid gold, inlaid lapis lazuli, carnelian, quartz, turquoise, obsidian, and colored glass. When Tutankhamun's tomb was found in 1922 the king rested inside three golden coffins. Two were made of wood with gold overlay, the third was 296 pounds of solid gold. He was wearing the death mask shown above. (I left it large so you could see the wonderful detail) Not bad for 30 centuries ago...

Abu Simbel is a temple built by Ramesses II in ancient Nubia, where he wished to demonstrate his power and his divine nature. Four colossal (65 feet high) statues of him sit in pairs flanking the entrance. The temple was cut out of the sandstone cliffs above the Nile River. When the High Dam was being constructed in the early 1960s, international co-operation assembled funds and technical expertise to move this temple to higher ground so that it would not be inundated by the waters of Lake Nasser.
